The US Department of Defense is deploying approximately 2,200 to 2,500 Marines to the Middle East to counter escalating threats to commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The reinforcement is centered around an Amphibious Ready Group led by the Japan-based amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the deployment following a request from US Central Command. The mobilization introduces the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to the region, a rapid-response force equipped with a squadron of F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter jets and MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
The immediate catalyst for the movement is Iran’s ongoing targeting of commercial shipping and threats to effectively close the Strait of Hormuz. The strait serves as a critical global energy chokepoint, facilitating the transit of roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments.
The deployment represents a continuation of the US military buildup resulting from the expanding conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran that escalated in late February 2026. The naval movement follows reciprocal military actions, including heavy US and Israeli strikes that targeted military infrastructure on Iran’s Kharg Island, the primary hub for Iranian oil exports.
Tensions in the region remain elevated following reciprocal drone and missile attacks across the Gulf, alongside the deaths of 13 US service members since the conflict expanded. This total includes six soldiers who recently died in a KC-135 refueling aircraft crash in Iraq.
Defense officials have stated that the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit is not intended to serve as a ground invasion force. The stated operational objectives are to protect commercial shipping routes, deter further Iranian escalation, and provide regional commanders with flexible combat and evacuation options.
As of March 13-14, 2026, the United States is significantly intensifying its military presence in the Middle East, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approving the deployment of the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) and elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the region. pic.twitter.com/eXbpC2mbzr
