Pedrosa/Campos: Portugal’s Dominant Four-Time National Beach Volleyball Champions

Portuguese athletes celebrate at the beach volleyball tournament

João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos just made history. This dynamic duo secured their fourth consecutive national championship in beach volleyball. The win happened at the Beach Stadium in Matosinhos, which is the European City of Sport for 2025. This incredible achievement confirms their spot as Portugal’s top beach volleyball team.

Their journey to the top has been quite a climb. Just last August, they celebrated their victory in the seventh and final stage of the 2025 National Circuit. That win truly solidified their standing. It also showed off a career filled with consistent improvement. Roughly a month later, they did something even bigger. Pedrosa and Campos beat Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Sorum, the world’s number one team from Norway. This strong showing earned them an excellent fifth place at the prestigious Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in João Pessoa.

Pedrosa and Campos started as promising young players. Now, they are a regular sight among the sport’s elite. They competed in the 2023 World Championship. They also played in the European Championship in both 2024 and 2025. Their talent shone through with a third and a fifth-place finish at the Nations Cup. The last edition of that tournament took place in Espinho.

Their path to success began to stand out in 2017. They earned a third-place finish in the CEV Youth Continental Cup. By 2021, with more experience under their belts, they reached the podium in four World Tour tournaments. The year 2022 marked a significant step. The duo firmly established themselves on the Beach Pro Tour, which is the sport’s World Circuit. In that same impressive year, they won both the University World Championships and the National Circuit.

The year 2023 brought their first major international title. They triumphed at the BPT Challenge in Edmonton, Canada. That same year, they added a third-place finish at the Beach Mediterranean Games. Their presence in high-level competition truly solidified in 2024 and 2025. They were key participants in the 2023 World Championship and the European Championships. During this time, they also achieved a third place in the Nations Cup Finals. They consistently finished in the top ten in many top tournaments. This proves they can compete with the best teams worldwide.

The 2025 National Beach Volleyball Circuit highlighted Pedrosa and Campos’s continued dominance. However, it also showed the growing competition within the sport in Portugal. In the final match, they secured their fourth national championship after a fierce battle. They faced brothers Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa, who also receive support from the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV). The Sousa brothers, for their part, once again finished as runners-up.
