Pedro Sánchez asks to take off his tie to lower the bill

The president of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, asked this Friday to follow his example and take off his tie, to reduce the energy bill by needing less air conditioning.

“I would like them to see that I am not wearing a tie, that means that we can all also save from an energy point of view,” Pedro Sánchez said with a smile during a press conference, while showing his shirt collar open. “I have asked the ministers (…) and public officials, and I would also like to (ask) the private sector, if it has not already done so, that when it is not necessary, not to wear a tie,” said Sánchez.

“So we will also be [colaborando] energy saving, which is so necessary in our country”, he continued. The president of the Spanish government usually wears ties at public events and press conferences.

Sánchez also announced that the council of ministers will adopt on Monday “a package of urgent measures for energy efficiency and saving”, in line “with what other European countries are doing”, although without detailing what those measures will be.

Spain has taken measures in recent months to reduce the energy bill, within the framework of efforts requested by Brussels to end Europe’s dependence on Russian gas.
