Chilean actor Pedro Pascal was chosen as one of the 35 “Great Immigrants of the Year”a list from the Carnegie Corporation Educational Fund that recognizes naturalized US citizens whose contributions and actions have enriched the country’s democracy.
The philanthropic organization also recognizes this 2023 the editor-in-chief of Elle magazine in the US, the Colombian Nina García; Peruvian biophysicist María Freirethe Guatemalan activist Karen González, as well as the professor Karen Lozano and the businessman Daniel Lubetzky, both Mexicans.
Dame Louise Richardson, president of the Carnegie Corporation, explained that the initiative is a tribute to the legacy of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who, like the honorees, “succeeded in America, contributed enormously to his adopted country, and inspired others to do the same”.
The list also includes the Nobel laureates in Economic Sciences 2021, Guido Imbens, and in Chemistry 1981, Roald Hoffmann.
Seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan are also in the selection.
Pascal, 48, has become the actor of the moment after his appearance in the phenomenon “The Last of Us” and in the hit series “The Mandalorian” (Disney+). The Chilean will arrive as one of the great favorites at the Emmys in this season of television awards.
Recently, Pascal has also participated in the well-known program “Saturday Night Live” on NBC; she will star opposite Ethan Hawke in the queer short film “Strange Way of Life,” directed by Pedro Almodóvar, and will appear in the films “Drive Away Dolls” and “Freaky Tales” by Ethan Coen and Anna Boden, respectively.
The fund, based in New York, highlights in a statement that “the contributions of immigrants make our country more vibrant and our democracy more resilient.”
The list has been created since 2006 and has recognized more than 700 personalities.
Selectees will be recognized with a full-page public service announcement in the New York Times on July 4, the holiday celebrating American Independence.
