Patrick Mahomes embroiled in post-game brawl after Chiefs-Lions game

Well, folks, ‘Sunday Night Football’ usually serves up thrills, but this past Sunday, it dished out a real head-scratcher. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes found himself right in the middle of an unexpected sideline commotion after the game. It was quite a dramatic scene.

The Chiefs had just defeated the Detroit Lions with a score of 30-17. This happened at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on October 12. As teams started leaving the field, Mahomes, who is 30 years old, extended his hand. He was trying to give Detroit safety Brian Branch a high-five. Branch, a younger player at 23, was not interested. He simply ignored Mahomes and kept walking.

Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, 28, saw the whole thing. He wasn’t happy about Branch’s snub. So, Smith-Schuster walked over and confronted Branch near the middle of the field. Things quickly escalated. Branch threw a punch, hitting Smith-Schuster in the face mask. The force sent the Chiefs player to the ground.

Smith-Schuster bounced right back up. He immediately went after Branch, ready for more action. Soon, players from both teams rushed in, creating a chaotic on-field brawl. When everyone was finally separated, Smith-Schuster had a bloody nose. Many people were left scratching their heads, wondering how a simple post-game interaction could go so wrong.

Smith-Schuster later spoke to reporters about Branch. “He’s a great player and he’s a huge part of their team,” he said. “I expected to shake his hand after the game and just say, ‘Good game.’ But he threw a punch at me instead.”

Mahomes also shared his thoughts about Branch’s actions. He told NBC reporter Melissa Stark on the field, “Look, we play the game between the whistles. They can do all the extra stuff they want. We just stick to playing the game.”

During his post-game press conference, Mahomes added more. “They are a physical team, and they play with a certain mindset,” Mahomes stated. “We’re going to match that mindset. We’re not afraid to face anyone. Coach Andy Reid teaches us that every day. We’ll bring the same intensity as whoever steps onto that field.”

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, 67, was still trying to make sense of the incident. He spoke to the press after the game. “The guy just came over and hit JuJu for seemingly no reason,” Reid explained. “That was tough. It really did quite a bit of damage to JuJu’s nose.”

Branch later offered his side of the story. He said he was upset because Smith-Schuster had supposedly blocked him from behind late in the game. Branch claimed the referees missed this play. “I could have gotten injured on that play,” Branch admitted. “Still, I know I shouldn’t have done what I did.”

Branch went on to add, “It was a childish thing to do. But I’m tired of players doing things between plays that the referees don’t catch. They try to intimidate me out there. I never should have done it. It was childish.”

As of now, the NFL has not announced any fines or suspensions for the players involved in this particular skirmish. It’s worth noting that Branch was previously fined $23,186. This was for face mask and unsportsmanlike conduct infractions last month. That happened after the Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers.

The win moved the Chiefs’ record to 3-3 for the season. They will host the Las Vegas Raiders next. That game is set for Sunday, October 19. Meanwhile, the loss left the Lions with a 4-2 record. Their next game will be at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, October 20.
