Sri Lanka’s 25-year-old right-handed opening batsman Pathum Nissanka managed to score a double century in the first game of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. Pathum has now become the first player in ODI cricket for Sri Lanka to score a double century. Earlier, Sanath Jayasuriya managed to top score for Sri Lanka in ODI, having scored an innings of 189 runs against India in 2000. Due to the strength of Pathum’s innings, Sri Lanka managed to score 381 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 50 overs in this first match.

In this first ODI match, the Afghanistan team opted to bowl after winning the toss. Thereafter, Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando, who started the innings for Sri Lanka, did not let the team suffer a setback in the first 10 overs and took the score to 90 runs. While Fakhar Zaman also played an unbeaten innings of 210 runs in the match against Zimbabwe in 2018.
