Passengers stranded at AILA flew on another plane to NY

A JetBlue airline plane with 170 passengers that left Cibao airport bound for New York, was diverted yesterday to Las Americas International Airport (AILA) after presenting a mechanical failure.

The company Aeropuertos Dominicanos XXI (Aerodom) explained that flight B6 236 bound for New York had to be diverted to AILA, after indicating a mechanical failure in turbine number 1 of the aircraft.

The company explained that the aircraft remains inoperative on the C-4 cargo platform, with no estimated departure time until it is checked and repaired.

While the 170 passengers were rescued by a contingency flight of the same airline, registration B6 8565, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States, which took off with the stranded travelers after two in the afternoon this Sunday.

Despite the situation, the plane was not declared an emergency, but instead landed within the regular rules established by the aeronautical and airport authorities.

Anticipating any situation on the ground, the airport’s Emergency Plan was activated with firefighting units, fire trucks, members of the Civil Defense, medical and paramedical personnel and the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation (Cesac).

The company said that the pilot notified the AILA control tower of a heating problem in engine number 1 of the aircraft.

It took off from Santiago.
The JetBlue flight had taken off from Santiago’s Cibao airport at 6:30 in the morning, bound for New York City’s John F. Kennedy airport.
