parting brothers

José Herrada (37 years old) and Jesús (32) have been sharing a team for twelve years. In fact, Jesús is playing his thirteenth season as a professional after making the leap in 2011 in the ranks of Movistar. Precisely that season, that of its premiere, was the only one in which he did not wear the same jersey as his brother, a José who would debut in 2006 (Viña Magna-Cropu, Contentpolis, Caja Rural…) and who in 2012 ended up at Movistar, in which Jesus was already. Since then both have gone hand in hand and in 2018 they went to Cofidis, team they are currently in… and in 2023 it will all end. José, who in October 38 years ago, is facing his last campaign as a professional: “The decision is already made” stands out in the Mallorca Challenge.

It will undoubtedly be a time of change for the eldest of the Herradas, that even this month an account was opened instagram: “Premiering account in my 18th professional season. It has cost me a bit ”, she published sarcastically on social networks. “I really want to enjoy the year. Sometimes you think that the races you are in are running for the last time, but you focus more on the test as such, on sports. When the end is closer, surely he will think about it more”, says the man from Mota del Cuervo, and the thing is that the people from Cuenca are all veterans in the team and in the peloton in general, especially in a Spanish key. José has two victories while the ‘little’ Jesús, with one of the most notable winners of the Spanish today, has 18. The last one, in the last Vuelta. In the Challenge he won two Trophies: “The truth is that I have good memories here. Those two victories, I was second in the Spanish Championship in 2021… I hope I can fight these days”says the man from Cuenca. In the Calvià Trophy, José was 46th and Jesús 97th. They will go further.

“I made my debut last Sunday in Valencia and the sensations were good. This week in Mallorca will be difficult due to the weather, but I will try to get in good shape”, adds Jesús, who drops a small uncertainty that his brother is in charge of closing quickly: “Here I am with José for the last time… in principle”, while smiling. He knows there is no going back. “We will enjoy it to the extent that we can,” he adds. And, then, how will this farewell be? On paper, the plan is already outlined. “Everything that can be together with my brother, fine, but what is playing and better comes to the team. We have discussed it and if everything is fulfilled, the goodbye will be in La Vuelta ”reveals José about what would theoretically be his last race as a professional.

In 2019, in Javalambre, he stayed close to glory (3rd), and the Spanish round once again has a stage finish at this peak in 2023. Afterwards, it will be Jesús who will keep the Herrada surname active. The case of this saga from Cuenca is by no means isolated, because in the squad there are more brothers competing, although it is true that it is more difficult to be in the same team. Without going any further, in this same Challenge are the Serranos: Gonzalo (Movistar) and Javier (EOLO). In the rest of the peloton there are more, like Izagirre (Ion, in Cofidis and Gorka, in Movistar), Yates (Adam, in UAE and Simon, in Jayco), García Pierna (Raúl and Carlos, both at Kern Pharma), the Azparrens (Xabier Mikel and Enekoitz at Euskatel)… They will continue to share races and roads, but the Herradas no longer. Until then, take advantage.
