Paris: the construction of the Arena Porte de la Chapelle is launched

Now called the Arena Porte de la Chapelle – and no longer the Arena II – this venue will host several events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, before becoming a hall for shows, concerts and high-level sport. The first stone of the site will be laid this Tuesday, October 5.

“The only Parisian construction upstream of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is part of a new mixed district between the gates of La Chapelle and Aubervilliers, with the creation of ZAC Gare des Mines-Fillettes”, welcomes the Parisian municipality in the day before the laying of the symbolic first stone of this building, the delivery of which is scheduled for summer 2023.

Between the Coubertin Stadium and the Accor Arena

Considered one of the emblematic projects of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Arena Porte de la Chapelle was designed to become an “important sports infrastructure” of “intermediate level”. With a capacity of 8,000 seats, it is located between the Pierre de Coubertin stadium (4,000 seats) and the Accor Arena (15,000 seats).

From 2023, and even before the Olympics if the site is not behind schedule, the room should be accessible to residents and host sports competitions and cultural events. It has in fact been designed to house, in addition to sporting events, concerts, shows and various congresses.

During the summer of 2024, the Arena Porte de la Chapelle will be entirely dedicated to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, since it will host the events of badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, para-badminton, para-taekwondo and para-weightlifting. . At the end of the Games, it should above all become the official residence of Paris Basketball.

From its inauguration, it will therefore allow “to organize sports competitions of national or international level”, we rejoice at the City of Paris, where we admit that this sports equipment is welcome to complete the offer of the north-east. Parisian in terms of local sports. For this, “two gymnasiums and complementary activity premises of the complex will be accessible on a daily basis by the inhabitants of North Paris”, underlines the organization of the Olympics.

Ultimately, the Arena Porte de la Chapelle should be – after the adoption of this wish by the Parisian elected officials meeting at the Council of Paris – definitively renamed the Arena Alice Milliat, in tribute to this French swimmer, hockey player and rower considered at the beginning of the 20th century as one of the greatest activists in the fight for the recognition of women’s sport at the international level.
