Paredes connects 3 home runs; Rays defeat Yankees

Isaac Paredes homered in his first three at-bats and the Tampa Bay Rays outscored the New York Yankees 5-4 Tuesday night, suffering just their third loss in 20 games.

The Mexican Paredes, who drove in four runs, combined with the Colombian Harold Ramírez to hit consecutive home runs in the first inning, against the Cuban Néstor Cortés.

In the third, Paredes put the Rays up 3-2 and in the fifth he added a two-run shot to the first pitch after Clarke Schmidt came on in relief.

It was only the second time Paredes had more than one home run in a game. On May 18, he had hit two against Detroit.

The Hermosillo second baseman was hit by a pitch from Ron Marinaccio in the seventh inning.

“The adrenaline definitely said that I had to hit another home run,” Paredes said.

Tampa Bay acquired the 23-year-old from Detroit on April 4 for outfielder Austin Meadows. Paredes is batting .209 with eight homers and 16 RBIs. Ten of his last 13 hits have been extra-base hits.

“The series against the Yankees are always very tough and that makes them special,” said Paredes.

Shawn Armstrong (1-1), the second of seven Tampa Bay pitchers, earned his first victory with the team, despite giving up DJ LeMahieu’s two-run single that tied the game in the second inning.

Cortes (6-3) allowed four runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up three home runs for the first time in his major league career.

For the Yankees, the Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 3-0 with a run scored, Marwin González 4-2 with two runs scored and two produced.

For the Rays, Cubans Yandy Díaz 4-1 with a run scored, Randy Arozarena 4-1. The Mexican Paredes 3-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. The Colombian Ramírez 4-2 with a run scored and an RBI. The Dominicans Francisco Mejía 4-0, Vidal Bruján 3-0.
