Paraguay hopes to continue strengthening ties with Colombia after Petro’s triumph

The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, congratulated the leftist Gustavo Petro on Monday for his victory in the second round of the elections in Colombia, and said that they will continue to strengthen ties between the two countries.

"Our congratulations to Gustavo Petro as the new president-elect of the Republic of Colombia and to the brotherly Colombian people for this exemplary election day that reaffirms their democratic commitment."Abdo Benítez posted on his Twitter account.

The Paraguayan president added that they will continue "strengthening historical ties" between their countries.

Petro, from the Historical Pact coalition, won with 50.44% of the vote, 3.13 percentage points more than the populist Rodolfo Hernández, who competed as an independent under the umbrella of a movement called the League of Anti-Corruption Governors.

On August 7, Petro will be sworn in as successor to President Iván Duque, which will close a cycle of more than 200 years of right-wing governments.
