Paraguay Extradites Top Ally of Notorious American Convict Sebastián Marset to the United States

Uruguayan Drug Lord Associate Extradited to US

Paraguay has extradited Federico Santoro, the right-hand man of Uruguayan drug lord Sebastián Marset, to the United States on Thursday.

Background and Arrest

Santoro, a Uruguayan national, was arrested in the Paraguayan town of Minga Guazú in August 2023, as part of the anti-drug operation "A Ultranza Py." He was in charge of Marset’s financial scheme and was charged in Paraguay with money laundering and criminal association.

Extradition and Charges

The Paraguayan Prosecutor’s Office had requested the "criterion of opportunity," which allowed Santoro to be extradited to the US. He faces charges of participating in a money laundering conspiracy and is expected to be tried in the United States. Santoro could face a sentence of between five and 22 years in prison if convicted.

Process and Future

The process of charging Santoro in Paraguay was suspended following the US lawsuit, but it can resume if he is acquitted or does not satisfy the sentence in the United States. According to Paraguayan media ABC, this does not prevent him from continuing to face charges in the future.
