The coaching carousel keeps spinning in Athens. Panathinaikos, a true titan of Greek football, is currently without a leader. They just let go of Rui Vitória on Monday. Now they’re thinking about a very familiar face: Fernando Santos.
The 70-year-old Portuguese coach is on their radar. This is true even with his recent tough runs. He faced challenges managing Besiktas and the national teams of Poland and Azerbaijan. He was actually dismissed from Azerbaijan just this past week, on the 8th, after a difficult 0-5 loss to Iceland.
It seems the lure of the Aegean Sea is strong for Santos. He reportedly put a return to Greece at the top of his wish list. That’s why he recently turned down an offer from Al Ahly of Egypt. He’s no stranger to Greek football, having previously coached AEK, Panathinaikos, PAOK, and the Greek national team itself. Talk about a blast from the past!
