A hit by second baseman Edgar Muñoz decided this Friday in the ninth inning the 3-2 victory of Astronautas de Los Santos, from Panama, against Criollos de Caguas, from Puerto Rico, in the first game of the 2022 Caribbean Series.
Muñoz shot uncatchable to the right field to leave his rivals on the field, chartering José Caballero, at the Quisqueya Stadium, in Santo Domingo.
Abdiel Saldana was the winning pitcher (1-0) despite allowing a run in the ninth inning, in which the Criollos took advantage of errors with the glove of third baseman Caballero and shortstop Eduardo Thomas to tie 2-2 with a streak scored by Brett Rodriguez. The right-hander allowed one hit and struck out a couple of opponents.
Alexis Diaz lost (0-1).
Roberto ‘Bebo’ Pérez hit an RBI single to center field to put the Puerto Ricans ahead in the fourth inning.
Astronauts responded in the eighth chapter with two lines. Olmo Rosario hit a solo homer and Christian Bethancourt had a hit that drove in pinch-runner Daniel Jimenez.
Caimanes de Barranquilla (Colombia) and Navegantes del Magallanes (Venezuela) face off in the second round, starting at 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT). Gigantes del Cibao (Dominican Republic) and Charros de Jalisco (Mexico) close the day at 8:00 p.m. local time (00:00 GMT on Saturday).
