Pakistan: Five soldiers killed by gunfire from Afghanistan

The attack was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban.

At least five members of the Pakistani forces were killed by gunfire from Afghanistan on the border, the local army announced on Sunday February 6. The attack was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban. “Pakistan strongly condemns the use of Afghan soil by terrorists”, the army said, adding that it was determined to defend its border.

The attack, claimed by the rebels of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), took place in the district of Kurram, in the unstable province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (north-west of the country), along the Afghan border. The TTP has grown bolder since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in the summer of 2021, and it has stepped up its attacks since the end of a month-long truce with the government last year.

The Taliban are separate groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but they share a common ideology and each group is made up of members who live on opposite sides of the border between the two countries.
