Pakistan Cricketers Who Played in IPL Before Ban: Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Others

The Indian Premier League, one of the world’s most thrilling cricket tournaments, is set to resume after a brief pause due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. While the exact restart date is still unconfirmed, sources suggest it could be as early as May 15 or 16.

Lesser-Known Pakistani Players in the IPL

The IPL has a rich history, dating back to 2008. Over the years, it has featured some of the biggest names in cricket, including Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, and Sourav Ganguly. In its inaugural season, the league attracted several top Pakistani players, such as Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, and Kamran Akmal. However, following the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008, Pakistani players were barred from participating in the IPL.
Eleven Pakistani cricketers took part in the first IPL season. The Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Sourav Ganguly, had the most Pakistani players. While fans are familiar with players like Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi, there are three lesser-known Pakistani cricketers who played in the IPL’s inaugural season.

Unsung Heroes

Younis Khan, a key player for the Rajasthan Royals, is one such cricketer. Although he only played one match, his involvement in the tournament is often overlooked. Mohammad Asif, who played for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), is another example. He took eight wickets in eight matches, dismissing notable players like Adam Gilchrist, MS Dhoni, and VVS Laxman. Salman Butt, a former Pakistani opening batsman, also featured in the IPL’s first season with the Kolkata Knight Riders. He scored 193 runs in seven matches, with his highest score being 73 against the Chennai Super Kings.
These players, though not as well-known as some of their counterparts, made significant contributions to their respective teams during the IPL’s early days. Their stories are a fascinating footnote in the history of one of cricket’s most exciting leagues.
