Football fans, get ready for another dose of unexpected joy! Just when we thought Kairat Almaty’s incredible journey into the Champions League Group Stage was the biggest shocker, two more teams have written their own fairytale endings. Pafos from Cyprus and Bodø/Glimt from Norway have joined the party. They both secured their very first spots in the main part of Europe’s top club competition. It was a night of big upsets. Both teams sent more established clubs packing. Pafos eliminated Red Star, and Bodø/Glimt got past Sturm Graz.

Pafos and Bodø/Glimt celebrate Group Stage presence in Champions after historic victories

The Cypriot side, Pafos, truly stole the show. They faced a Red Star team that knows its way around European football. Going into the second match, the tie was completely open. Red Star had lost 2-1 at home in the first leg. However, their European experience didn’t help much in the end. The second leg finished in a 1-1 draw. Red Star even took the lead, with Mirko Ivanic scoring in the 60th minute. But a late goal from Jaja, set up by Portuguese player Pepe, leveled the score. This equalizer sparked wild celebrations back in Cyprus. Another Portuguese player, Domingos Quina, was on the squad for Pafos but didn’t play.

Bodø/Glimt’s path was a bit less dramatic but just as significant. They had already dominated the first leg at home, winning 5-0. So, their second leg against Sturm Graz was mostly a formality. They did lose that match 2-1 on the road. Still, their comfortable 6-2 aggregate win meant they sailed through. It was a strong display of their power over two legs.

The excitement isn’t over yet. Wednesday will see the final spots in the Group Stage decided. We have some exciting matches to look forward to. Qarabag plays Ferencvaros, Benfica takes on Fenerbahçe, Club Brugge faces Rangers, and Copenhagen goes up against Basel. More football drama is surely on the way!
