Paddle Crisis Ensues as Top Players Boycott Gijón Tournament Amid Dispute

The professional padel world is embroiled in a drama that is affecting the upcoming Gijón tournament, scheduled to take place at the end of this month. The main stars of the circuit are still uncertain about their participation, and the tournament’s organization is facing a difficult situation. Initially, the registrations were supposed to close last week, but due to the absence of top players, Premier Padel extended the deadline by seven more days. This move was made in an attempt to resolve the issue and encourage the top players to participate.

Reasons Behind the Veto

The players have voiced their concerns and reasons for the veto, stating that they have not been taken into account in certain decisions, such as the modification of the tournament’s format for this season. As a result, they have agreed to boycott the Gijón P2 as a means of exerting pressure on the circuit. During the past few days, meetings have been held to address the issue, but the registration list still shows significant absences. In fact, some doubles that were initially signed up no longer appear on the official Premier Padel list, with the top-20 and even top-50 players now missing.

Pressure from Brands and the Circuit

In an effort to resolve the situation, one of the most prestigious paddle brands worldwide, which sponsors several top players, has sent a letter to its players, urging them to reconsider their decision and participate in the Asturian test. The letter highlights the significant investment made by the brand in the growth of the sport and requests that the players continue to support them by participating in tournaments and events that are crucial for the brand’s commercial strategy. The document specifically lists the “priority assistance” tests, including the P2 of Gijón.

The circuit has also issued a warning to the players, notifying them of the potential consequences of their actions, including legal, sports, and financial repercussions. The letter emphasizes that Premier Padel, along with its main partners, is prepared to use all necessary resources to defend its rights and enforce the agreements signed.

Meetings and Lack of Agreement

Despite several meetings between the PPA, Premier Padel, and FIP, no agreement has been reached, and the situation remains unresolved. The law cabinet document mentions that the players’ concerns about the distribution of points and the tournament format are acknowledged, but it claims that the reasons behind the veto are unclear. The PPA has also stated that it was not aware of the specific points that generated the veto, implying a potential breakdown or lack of understanding between the players, the PPA, or both. With only a few hours left to find a solution, the tension is increasing, and the differences between the parties involved in the professional padel world are becoming more apparent.
