Overwatch 2 Director Plans More Story Content Post-PvE Cancellation

For many players, the world of Overwatch 2 has felt a bit quiet on the story front. The game, known for its lively characters and rich background, has left some fans wanting more narrative, especially after a big change to its planned Player-vs-Environment content.

Aaron Keller, the game director for Overwatch 2, recently spoke about these concerns. He joined content creator and streamer Jay3, along with Conor McLead, one of the game’s narrative designers, to chat about the game’s path forward. Keller noted that a major point for fans, especially online, is the feeling that Overwatch 2 isn’t delivering much in terms of story or lore right now. He brought up how the first Overwatch game used to have many animated shorts. These short films helped build the game’s universe and connect players to its 43 characters. However, new animated shorts have been rare since Overwatch 2 first came out in 2022.

Keller openly shared that the development team had big plans for a main story mode within the PvE part of the game. He mentioned it was supposed to be like a campaign. But, he admitted, “it didn’t work out.” This meant a bit of a “reset” for the team. Yet, they are still keen to try again. Keller believes that one of Overwatch’s best features is its rich universe and unique characters. Getting back to that is a key goal. He also suggested that to move forward, they might need to take a step back first.

Overwatch 2 has seen some significant gameplay changes this year. They added a new Stadium mode in February. New content like maps and a new hero have also arrived. Plus, a new “Perk” system has changed how the game plays. These updates show they are keeping some promises.

Still, if Blizzard can release more animated shorts or story-focused content, it might bring back many long-time fans. After all, the heart of Overwatch often lies in its compelling narrative.

Overwatch 2 is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
