A gigantic European customs operation recently seized no less than 16.7 million counterfeit toys. The intervention is the culmination of a two-year investigation coordinated by French customs, reports BFM TV. Europol, Italy, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic are associated with it.

All items seized were sold on the Internet. These are counterfeits of “most of the franchises particularly popular with children, teenagers and young adults”, according to the press release of the Ministry of Economy. In total, nearly 600 references copied in this way were identified among the various toys seized.

Poor quality items

During this European operation, 5.5 million items were seized by French customs officers. Most of the counterfeits came from China and “were offered for sale by Chinese suppliers, most of them without legal existence”, according to Bercy.

The real owners of the intellectual property rights of the franchises are the real victims of this kind of trade. They suffer a financial loss but also a loss of image, counterfeit products are often of poor quality. In the first half of 2022, 8.2 million counterfeits were seized by customs in France, an increase of 53% compared to 2021, adds BFMTV.
