Oscar 2025: Can Kanguwa Defy Box Office Failure and Win Big

Surprising Turn of Events for Kanguva

Despite its disappointing performance at the box office, Kanguva has made a surprising entry into the Oscar 2025 nomination race. The film, which starred Bobby Deol as a mute villain, had garnered significant expectations but failed to deliver, resulting in a box office disaster.

A Glimmer of Hope

However, the film’s digital release on an OTT platform within a month of its theatrical release may have contributed to its Oscar consideration. Although it earned only Rs 106 crore at the ticket window, a mere one-third of its budget, the film received a decent response on the digital platform.

The Road to Oscar Nomination

India had initially submitted “Missing Ladies” for Oscar consideration, but it was rejected. Nevertheless, the film’s makers can still independently submit their film for nomination. Kanguva is among the Indian films being considered for nomination, alongside other films like Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), Santosh, Swatantra Veer Savarkar, All We Imagine as Light, and Girls Will Be Girls.

Upcoming Voting Schedule

Voting for nominations will commence on January 8, 2025, and conclude on January 12, 2025. The results will be announced on January 17, 2025, and the Oscars 2025 ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theater in Ovation Hollywood.

Kanguva’s Box Office Performance

Despite its poor overall performance, Kanguva had a promising start, earning Rs 24 crore on its first day in India. However, the collection declined steadily, with the film earning only around Rs 30 crores in the next three days and a mere Rs 3.15 crores on the 5th day. The total collection of the film in India was Rs 69.10 crore.
