Opposition figures are part of the new Haitian government

The Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, presented on Wednesday a new government in which several opposition figures stand out, a sector with which he signed an agreement last September aimed at guaranteeing political stability, but which so far has not had the programmed scopes.

The new government includes former ministers, members of the opposition and the ruling Parti Haitien Tèt Kale (PHTK). This is the second cabinet launched by Henry after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, on July 7.

Ricard Pierre, a member of the leftist Popular and Democratic Sector (SDP), was appointed Minister of Planning and Cooperation. Rosemond Pradel, also from the opposition, is the new Minister of Public Works. Both were signatories to the 9/11 agreement.

Henry appointed his own lawyer, Bertho Dorcé, Minister of Justice and Public Safety.

There are at least two former ministers in the new government: Alix Larsen will lead the Ministry of Public Health and Population, while Nesmy Manigat returns to the Ministry of Education.

These changes are part of key points of the agreement between Henry and sectors of the opposition that demanded the resignation of Moise.

The murder of Moise at his private home aggravated the socio-political and economic crisis in Haiti, marked by repeated fuel shortages, the free action of the armed gangs that dominate parts of the country, mainly Port-au-Prince, kidnappings, food insecurity and the exodus of thousands of people.

The head of Haiti’s main armed gang, Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue, has repeatedly demanded Henry’s resignation.

Cherizier and his group blocked fuel distribution since mid-September, causing chaos in the country. However, on November 12, he announced a weeklong truce so that the stations could stock up.
