OpenAI’s ChatGPT app reaches 500,000 downloads

The phenomenon around ChatGPT does not stop growing. Despite only being available in the US and iOS until recently, before communicating the expansion to 11 new countries, including some from Europe. Just six days after its release, the app has been downloaded more than 500,000 timesaccording to new analysis by application intelligence provider data.ai.

This fact positions it as one of the highest-performing app launches both this year and last, led only by the February 2022 arrival of the Trump-backed Twitter clone Truth Social.

Outperform the competition

OpenAI’s ChatGPT app came to unseat the competition, successfully breaking through including other popular AI and chatbot apps, as well as Bing and edge from Microsoft, which offered some of the first significant integrations of OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology.

Despite this, Bing and Microsoft Edge took advantage of the interest in ChatGPT upon its debut, respectively reaching 340K and 335K downloads on iOS and Android in their best five-day periods in February. Although OpenAI’s ChatGPT application easily beat themachieving 480 thousand installations in the first five days from its launch in the United States, when the app was only available on iOS.

Compared to just Bing and Edge iOS downloads, ChatGPT was even further ahead with its 480,000 installs versus Bing’s 250,000 and Edge’s 195,000 in this same time period.

Although it has only been available for a short time, the results of ChatGPT are positive. It is among the top five applications of AI chatbots in terms of downloads in the United States in May 2023.
