OpenAI Releases GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini in ChatGPT with Enhanced Coding Capabilities

OpenAI has rolled out its latest AI model, GPT-4.1, which can handle multiple data types simultaneously, including text and images. This enhanced multimodal capability is now live in ChatGPT, the company’s popular chatbot, and is available to all paid subscribers. Users with Plus, Pro, and Team accounts can access GPT-4.1 by selecting it from the model dropdown.

Improved Performance and New Features

GPT-4.1 boasts significant upgrades, particularly in coding and following user instructions. Its context window can handle up to 1 million tokens, a substantial increase from the 128,000 tokens supported by its predecessor, GPT-4o. Additionally, GPT-4.1 demonstrates faster coding capabilities, outperforming o3 and o4-mini.

Replacing GPT-4o mini with GPT-4.1 mini

OpenAI has also introduced GPT-4.1 mini, a more affordable and compact AI model that replaces GPT-4o mini. GPT-4.1 mini is now the default model for both free and paid ChatGPT users. Paid subscribers can still opt for GPT-4.1 using the model dropdown.

GPT-4.1 Series Expansion

In April, OpenAI released the GPT-4.1 series, including GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano, for developers through Microsoft Azure and GitHub. While GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini are now available in ChatGPT, the status of GPT-4.1 nano remains unclear.
