OpenAI Debuts ChatGPT Atlas: New Browser Acts as Personal AI Agent

OpenAI has unveiled “ChatGPT Atlas,” an AI-powered web browser equipped with an “Agent Mode” that can perform tasks for users, signaling the company’s ambition to redefine internet interaction.

The new browser aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the browsing experience, moving beyond traditional search to proactive assistance. Users will be able to delegate tasks such as booking restaurant reservations, arranging flights, or even editing documents within the browser itself.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated during a livestream promotion that the company hopes “people will use the internet in the future… with a chat experience in a web browser that can be a good guide.”

Atlas will be available globally “soon” across a range of platforms, including macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Adam Fry, a developer for ChatGPT Search, highlighted the browser’s “Memory” feature. This allows the browser to “adjust personally and help you more” over time. Users can manage this personalized data in settings and also utilize an Incognito window for private browsing.

The “Agent Mode” builds on previous AI agent tools like “Operator,” which enabled ChatGPT to operate a computer on behalf of a user. This enhanced capability supports complex operations, including online shopping, though not all functionalities are supported initially.

Another key feature is a split-screen interface that appears when users click a search result link. This displays the web page alongside an active ChatGPT conversation, providing a constant “assistant.” This split view can be closed by the user.

Additional functionalities include summaries of web page content and “Cursor Chat,” which allows for instant editing of selected sentences within emails or messages.
