Big tech firms are eyeing India for their next AI move. OpenAI and Meta Platforms are in talks with Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest companies, to expand AI offerings in the country.
These talks involve a potential partnership between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT. Right now, ChatGPT costs $20 per month, but OpenAI has discussed cutting the price to just a few dollars with its employees. It’s unclear if this price cut was discussed with Reliance.
Reliance wants to sell OpenAI’s models to its corporate clients through an API. The company, led by Mukesh Ambani, also talked about hosting and operating OpenAI’s models locally. This would allow customer data to stay in India.
Potential Data Center
Reliance plans to build a massive 3-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company discussed running Meta and OpenAI’s models at this facility, which would be the world’s largest data center.
Neither Meta nor OpenAI commented on these talks. Reliance Industries also didn’t respond to requests for comment.
