OnePlus commits 3 years of updates to its flagships

A few days ago we learned that OnePlus would join forces with its sister brand Oppo, and now we’re getting more details about what exactly this entails.

OnePlus confirmed that it will integrate OxygenOS into ColorOS and shared details about the update and commitment to updates on their own forum.

The most positive aspect of the news is that the merger ensures that OnePlus phones will have more years of updates:

  • Flagship product series (including T/R): The OnePlus 8 series and newer devices will receive 3 major Android updates and 4 years of security updates.
  • Nord/Nord CE: The first OnePlus Nord and the latest Nord/Nord CE devices will receive 2 major Android updates and 3 years of security updates.
  • Nord N series: Starting with N10 and N100, all N series devices will receive 1 major Android update and 3 years of security updates.

While diehard OnePlus fans aren’t too happy about the end of OxygenOS, it looks like it actually won’t be. As the company says, the owners won’t even notice.

THIS IS A CHANGE YOU PROBABLY WON’T EVEN NOTICE AS IT’S HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES. WE NOW HAVE A LARGER AND EVEN MORE CAPABLE DEVELOPER TEAM, MORE ADVANCED R&D CAPABILITIES, AND A MORE STREAMLINED DEVELOPMENT PROCESS COMING TOGETHER TO ENHANCE THE OXYGENOS EXPERIENCE.

The company claims that OxygenOS will remain the “global” operating system for OnePlus branded devices rather than ColorOS.

Everything is a little confusing, but It looks like the two software experiences will be combined, while the overall style and feature set of OxygenOS will remain.

We are happy that OnePlus is taking it a step further to ensure longer support and software updates for recent devices.
