One dead and 12 injured in train crash in Austria

Austria is bereaved by a train accident. One person was killed and 12 were injured when a train derailed near Vienna on Monday, emergency services said.

The accident occurred at the end of the day in the town of Münchendorf, south of the Austrian capital, “for unknown reasons”, said Andreas Zenker, spokesman for the Red Cross in the region. A car overturned on the embankment, while another ended its race in a field near the rails.

A hundred passengers

Among the injured, “three are seriously affected and nine slightly”, said Andreas Zenker, adding that a hundred passengers were on board. “Serious train accident in Münchendorf,” the emergency services wrote on Facebook earlier. “Several rescue helicopters and a large contingent of rescuers are mobilized”. The train was operated by the private company Raaberbahn connecting Austria with neighboring Hungary.

Fatal accidents are rare in this alpine country of nine million people. In February 2018, a train collision killed one person and injured 22. Two months later, 54 people were injured in another accident in Salzburg.
