Sometimes, the quiet hum of a highway journey can shatter in an instant. That’s what happened on a recent afternoon along the IP3 highway. Near the small town of Canas de Santa Maria, close to Tondela, a severe incident unfolded. A Rede Expressos bus, carrying 32 passengers, was involved in a devastating crash. A light vehicle and an ambulance were also part of this complex event. The tragic outcome was one life lost and 31 people hurt.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene without delay. Volunteer firefighters from Tondela were among the first to arrive. Sappers from Viseu quickly joined the effort. The situation was so serious that an INEM helicopter was dispatched. Its mission was to transport the most critically injured person. However, a somber turn of events occurred. The severely injured victim passed away right there, before any air transport could happen.
The deceased was a 54-year-old individual. They were the driver of the light vehicle involved in the collision. The initial impact was a head-on crash with the bus. Meanwhile, all of the injured passengers and crew were swiftly taken to local hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The bus involved in this incident had started its journey in Coimbra. Its final destination was Viseu. The ordinary route took a heartbreaking detour, leaving many lives changed by the sudden tragedy on the road.
