Un día antes de elección, excluyen a candidato a dirigir IBA

The rival of the current head of the beleaguered International Boxing Association (IBA) in a presidential election was declared ineligible on Thursday, a day before the vote.

Dutch boxing federation president Boris van der Vorst was excluded from Friday’s election by an independent investigative panel following an investigation into allegations of “prohibited collaboration” and campaigning, the IBA said in a statement.

Four other candidates to join the IBA board of directors were also declared ineligible.

Decisions made by the five-person Interim Nominating Unit working on behalf of the IBA can be challenged before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, boxing’s governing body stressed.

However, an appeal must be filed, heard and judged before elections scheduled for Friday at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

It is the third presidential election of the controversial boxing body in less than four years, a period marked by a conflict with the International Olympic Committee.

IBA President Umar Kremlev is seeking re-election and more legitimacy amid widespread sanctions against Russian sports by Olympic governing bodies during Russia’s war in Ukraine. The IOC is also concerned that the IBA now appears to be financially dependent on the Kremlin-backed energy company Gazprom.

The boxing body has come under constant criticism from the IOC in recent years over governance and financial integrity issues, as well as potentially inappropriate results of fights at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. rigged under previous leadership came to light in an investigation requested by the Kremlev.
