The swimming season kicked off with a splash in Coimbra. Portugal’s top swimmers, from youth to senior levels, gathered for the first day of the National Championships. Early highlights showed some familiar Olympic faces putting on a show right from the start.

Three Olympians truly owned the pool, securing individual victories. Miguel Nascimento, representing Benfica, was super fast in the 50-meter freestyle. He touched the wall in just 23.15 seconds, a strong opener for him. João Costa, from V. Guimarães, showed his skill in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing with a dominant time of 55.24 seconds.
But the biggest cheer of the day went to Ana Pinho Rodrigues from Sp. Braga. She powered through the 50-meter freestyle in 25.85 seconds. This win wasn’t just another gold; it marked her incredible 154th national title in her career. What an amazing achievement!
Other individual races brought more excitement and new champions. Vasco Alves Morgado of Algés took the 400-meter freestyle, clocking in at 3:59.43. In the 200-meter breaststroke, Benfica’s Carlos Daniel Nunes secured first place with a time of 2:18.52. Another Benfica swimmer, Rita Barros Frischknecht, led the way in the women’s 100-meter backstroke, finishing in 1:03.71. Cláudia Borges, also from Benfica, won the women’s 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:31.65. Mariana Mendes of Sporting showed incredible endurance, dominating the 1,500-meter freestyle in 17:10.34.
The first day ended with a couple of thrilling team relays. Sporting Club walked away with the win in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay, completing it in 8:26.17. Not to be outdone, Benfica claimed victory in the men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay, finishing strong with a time of 7:36.00.
Beyond the wins, some records also tumbled. Miguel Oliveira, a promising swimmer from V. Guimarães, smashed the national Youth A record. He swam the 100-meter backstroke in an impressive 57.00 seconds. And in the para-swimming event, Susana Veiga from Belenenses set a new national record. She improved the 100-meter backstroke (S9 category) record with a time of 1:18.73.
Looking at the team scoreboard, Benfica is leading the pack. They gathered a total of 9 medals on day one. Sporting is currently in second place with 4 medals, and Algés e Dafundo holds third with 3 medals. The competition promises more action as it continues this Friday.
