Gabby Thomas misses World Athletics Championships in Tokyo due to injury

Fresh off a stunning performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, triple gold medalist Gabby Thomas will miss the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The American sprinter, who shone brightly just weeks ago, confirmed her withdrawal due to an injury. Her absence will surely be felt at the global event, scheduled from September 13 to 21.

Thomas, 28, spoke openly about her decision. “I finally realized it’s okay to be human and take care of myself,” she shared in a statement. This moment of honesty offers a glimpse into the immense pressure elite athletes face. It highlights the difficult balance between competitive drive and personal well-being.

The setback stems from an Achilles tendon issue that began in May. The pain worsened significantly in July, making continued competition unwise. Despite qualifying for the World Championships that same month, Thomas has already missed several weeks of crucial training this year. Her body simply needed a break.

“We always want to do our best as athletes,” Thomas added. “But sometimes there’s nothing you can do about injuries. Sometimes you have to be patient and make the best decision for the long term.” This mature perspective shows her commitment to a lasting career, even if it means missing a major event. During the US trials, she still managed a third-place finish in the 200 meters.

Her Olympic triumphs in Paris 2024 included gold medals in the 200 meters, 4×100 meters relay, and 4×400 meters relay. Before these historic wins, Thomas had also secured a bronze in the 200 meters and a silver in the 4×100 meters relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At past World Championships, she boasts a gold from the 4×100 relay and a silver in the 200 meters, both earned at the Budapest 2023 event.
