A new rape case has shaken the world of football. A few days after the French Benjamin Mendy, the Portuguese Ruben Semedo, suspected of raping a 17-year-old girl, was arrested by the police in Greece and taken into custody.
The Portuguese international (3 caps), who plays at Olympiakos, must be presented to justice this Tuesday. The defender is accused of having made the young woman he met in a bar in the city of Oropos drink before inviting her to his home and sexually abusing her. An arrest warrant had been issued against him after the complaint filed on Sunday by the victim and his parents. If found guilty, Ruben Semedo faces a heavy prison sentence.
This isn’t the first time the 27-year-old has been in legal trouble. A little over three years ago, while playing in Villarreal (Spain), he was accused of kidnapping and attempted murder. Placed in pre-trial detention, he was eventually released. He also had to deal with justice for illegal possession of weapons, while last November he was sanctioned by his club for taking part in a party in a hotel with two teammates despite the restrictions related to Covid-19.
And his legal quarrels deprived him, this summer, of a transfer to the Premier League, where Wolverhampton wanted to secure his services. But he couldn’t get a work permit because of his problems. And it is not this new case that will fix his case, especially if he is found guilty.
