Olimpia: Argentina’s ‘100% Hockey’ Talent Nursery Challenges Sporting in World Cup

When you talk about roller hockey in Argentina, the club Olimpia often comes up first. This team, soon to face Sporting in the Club World Cup, isn’t just another club. It’s known as one of the best places in Argentina for finding and developing young talent. Olimpia has a special knack for turning raw skill into future stars, many of whom go on to play at the highest levels.

Think of big names like Carlos Nicolía, Pablo Álvarez, and Reinaldo García. What connects these Argentine legends? They’ve all won many titles. More importantly, they all started their journeys at Olimpia. This club was their first home, the place where their passion for hockey truly took root. Their successful careers are a testament to the club’s unique approach.

César Fraifer, Olimpia’s coach and a former goalkeeper himself, put it simply when speaking to Record. “Here, our motto is 100% hockey,” he said. “It means roller hockey is the only thing we do at Olimpia.” Fraifer explained that years ago, they tried bringing in other sports like basketball. But it just didn’t work out. The club’s focus has always been singular: preparing players in the junior ranks. The goal is to get them ready for the first division, and hopefully, for the Argentine national team. The ultimate dream for many is to move to Europe and play professionally.

The careers of Olimpia’s famous alumni certainly prove this point. Carlos Nicolía became one of Benfica’s top players this century. Pablo Álvarez, the only one of the three still playing, also spent time at Benfica. He really shone at Barcelona, becoming one of the best forwards globally. Álvarez returned to Barça last season after leaving Benfica and holds the record for most goals in the history of the OK Liga. Reinaldo García had a fantastic run with FC Porto. He retired with a stunning 48 trophies, including nine Portuguese championships.

All three players eventually left Argentina for Europe. That’s where you find the few professional roller hockey teams. In Argentina, despite deep love for the sport, true professional status remains a dream. Clubs like Olimpia work hard to bridge this gap. César mentioned that an average roller hockey player in Argentina earns about 250,000 Argentine pesos. This amount converts to just over 150 euros today, showing the big financial difference.

Fraifer explained the challenge. “We are among the most professional clubs, even within an amateur system,” he said. “We’ve managed to bring in physical trainers and a nutritionist recently. It takes a lot of effort from us. Neither the government nor private companies provide enough support. This makes it tough to meet the basic needs of a top team.” Even football clubs in Buenos Aires, like River Plate, Huracán, or Vélez Sarsfield, have roller hockey teams. However, the distance to clubs in San Juan makes it hard to create a strong league in the capital.

Olimpia finds itself in Group A of the Club World Cup. They are matched against Sporting, Barcelona, and their fellow Argentines, Andes Talleres. The chance to compete against two of the world’s biggest clubs has sparked huge excitement within the team.

Fraifer spoke about the team’s mood. “For many of our players, this will be their first time facing teams like these,” he explained. “So, the thought of playing against powerhouses like Sporting and Barça has created a lot of anticipation. We’ve prepared as best we can with the resources we have.” He knows the reality. “We’re going up against super-professional teams that live and breathe hockey all day, every day. Here at Olimpia, 100% of our players are also studying or working.”

Tomorrow night, at 1:30 AM, Olimpia will take on Sporting. The arena is expected to be packed with over 5,000 passionate fans, ready to cheer on their local heroes.
