Shohei Ohtani set a new career high with 13 strikeouts in eight dominant innings of two-hit ball and reached base three times as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Wednesday.

After giving up two singles leading off the first inning, Ohtani (6-4) retired 16 straight Royals batters and 23 of the last 24 he faced. The American League MVP matched his longest start in the majors and allowed just one baserunner in his final seven innings on a walk that was quickly reversed with a double play.

David MacKinnon had his first major league hit, an RBI single in the seventh for the Angels, who avoided a series sweep with their fourth win in six games.

Daniel Lynch (3-7) took the loss, allowing three hits and five walks on 104 pitches, his career high.

For the Royals, the Dominican Carlos Santana 3-0. Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rivera 3-0.

For the Angels, Venezuelan Luis Rengifo 4-2, with one run scored and one produced. Dominican Juan Lagares 4-0, with a run scored.
