Argentina Celebrates Copa América Victory with Jubilant Fans
Thousands of Argentines gathered around the Obelisk in Buenos Aires to celebrate their team’s Copa América victory, with many wrapped in Argentine flags and shouting "Go champion!"
The party continued for over four hours, with fans of all ages joining in the festivities. However, the celebration was abruptly ended when police intervened with water cannons and infantry troops to clear the streets, leading to running and some protesters throwing stones at officers.
Despite the police intervention, most fans quickly dispersed, and authorities reported no arrests or injuries.
The victory was a historic moment for Argentina, with fans celebrating the team’s second Copa América title in a row. Many fans paid tribute to Ángel Di María, who was playing in his final match for the national team.
"We are champions of America, let’s enjoy this precious moment that is unique for us since we have the chance to celebrate with the greatest, who is God Messi, and with the farewell of ‘Fideo’ Di Maria," said Pablo Iñigo, a fan who attended the celebration.
Motorists also joined in the celebration, honking their horns and waving Argentine flags as they drove along the central 9 de Julio Avenue.
The victory was also celebrated by President Javier Milei, who congratulated the team on social media.
In addition to the celebrations, a fan tragically died before the start of the match, after falling from a structure in front of the Obelisk.
The body of the 29-year-old victim was quickly removed by firefighters, and several hundred people had gathered to watch the match from the venue.
The celebrations were attended by many families with children, who took shelter from the cold and crowded around televisions to watch the match.
