NYC Mayor Mamdani Mends Ties At St. Patrick’s Day Parade

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani utilized his first St. Patrick’s Day in office to repair strained relationships with the local Catholic community and the New York Police Department. The mayor attended the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass on Tuesday before joining the traditional parade up Fifth Avenue.

The public appearances marked a diplomatic shift for the administration following a series of institutional clashes. According to CBS News New York, Mamdani engaged in a private meeting with Archbishop Ronald Hicks to discuss their overlapping leadership tenures. The meeting occurred after the mayor faced criticism for breaking a decades-long precedent by skipping the archbishop’s installation ceremony last month.

Following the religious service, Mamdani marched alongside NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and the department’s new co-chaplain, Timothy Cardinal Dolan. The mayor’s relationship with the police force has been fractured by his past support for defunding the police, as well as his recent dismissal of a Washington Square Park snowball fight that left two officers injured.

Mamdani began the Tuesday schedule by hosting his first St. Patrick’s Day breakfast at Gracie Mansion. The guest of honor was former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. During the event, Mamdani specifically praised Robinson for her steadfast support of the Palestinian cause, welcoming prominent figures from the world stage to the mayoral residence.
