NVIDIA Releases DLSS Update for Older RTX Cards Dating Back 2018

A new generation of Nvidia graphics cards has been released, and as expected, they sold out quickly. To support these new cards, Nvidia has launched an extensive driver update that introduces several new features, including the use of Multi Frame Generation with DLSS4, and improves existing functions. What’s surprising, however, is that these drivers are not only intended for the latest RTX 50 series, but also include performance improvements for older cards, such as the RTX 2080 from 2018.

According to PC Gamer notes, the updates bring new features and improvements to the RTX 5080, 5090, and 40 series, as well as enhancements to DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, and Deep Learning anti-aliasing, which should increase the performance of the RTX 30 and 20 series. Nvidia refers to these older cards as still benefiting from the new improvements, as shown in the table below.

The newer models in the 40s and 50s series will receive most of the improvements from the new DLSS 4 model, particularly the frame generation function. The 50s series can perform multi-frame generation with up to four AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered game frames. While some players may be skeptical about “fake frames” as a legitimate performance boost, this feature is still an impressive trick.

The RTX 5090 is a notable card, although the RTX 5080 is less so. However, spending a significant amount on a GPU might be more justifiable if Nvidia continues to support older hardware, almost seven years after its release.

How to get the update

To update to the latest NVIDIA driver, simply use the NVIDIA control panel. Search for the latest driver and select the installation. Note that some of the new features are still in the beta phase and may need to be activated manually before you can benefit from the advantages.
