Nvidia Confirms Rare RTX 5090 and 5070 Ti Production Error Affecting 0.5% GPUs

Nvidia has confirmed a production error in the current RTX 5000 series, specifically affecting the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti models. This issue, first reported by Tech Power Up, involves a missing ROP partition, which can lead to performance losses in 3D applications. The RTX 5070 Ti is also impacted.

According to Nvidia, the average reduction in performance is around 4 percent, although some sources report losses of up to 11 percent. However, it’s worth noting that only a very small proportion of the graphics cards delivered so far are affected – less than 0.5 percent, to be exact.

Nvidia announced that the production anomaly has been remedied, and affected customers can contact the card manufacturer for a replacement. The company stated, “We have identified a rare problem that affects less than 0.5 percent of the GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D and 5070 Ti GPUs, which have less than specified. The average impact on graphics performance is 4 percent and has no effect on AI and Compute workloads.”

NVIDIA doesn’t provide more precise figures on the number of affected graphics cards, but since the RTX 5090 has been generally available, the number of affected cards is likely very low. The RTX 5070 Ti, which has just been released, may have a higher number of affected models.

What should those affected do now?

The production error has already been addressed, so newly produced cards should no longer have the issue with too few ROP units. If you’re concerned about your own GPU, you can use free programs like Rop Benchmark to check the number of ROPs. The RTX 5090 should have over 176 ROPS, while the RTX 5070 Ti should have 96 ROPS. If you notice any deviations, you should contact the manufacturer immediately, as Nvidia promises to deliver a replacement for affected customers.

However, the timeframe for these replacements is uncertain, given the RTX 5090’s current poor availability and widespread sold-out status. Nvidia has recently increased production, but it may take several weeks or even months before the graphics cards become available again. Meanwhile, there is still no statement from Nvidia regarding reports of melted power connections on the RTX 5090.
