Nuria Piera in 35 years on investigative TV has felt “fear, a certain restlessness, uncertainty…”

The fate suffered by her family during her childhood, in which even her father was assassinated, prepared Nuria Piera to face threats, intimidation and the challenges of denouncing government corruption, deception of citizens and fraud that during the last 35 years are her letter of introduction in her research program, “Nuria en el 9”, which has been broadcast since January 1987 by Color Vision.

So he says he does not know any other lifestyle than the one he has lived, so he assures that he could not define if it was worth so much exposure to danger compared to the results of the cases that he has brought to light.

The journalist has not registered the innumerable complaints that she has presented on her program, but she assures that every Saturday, each broadcast of a program, she wins two, three or four new enemies.

Have you ever felt fear? She was asked. His response: “Yes, apprehension, fear, some restlessness, uncertainty, more so when one has a family.”

However, this has not robbed her of peace or calm, much less her interest and commitment as a journalist and citizen to continue doing investigative work.

So his daily life, which he defines as very calm and homelike, has not been affected. “I’m not a party girl, or a lot of outgoing, after work, most of the time I’m always at home and I have a closed circle of friends with whom I hang out.”

Television was always a natural environment for Nuria Piera, her father was the producer of the program “Los punto sobre las Ies”, by Radio Televisión Dominicana. Today channel 4.

After the death of her father, Nuria began her time on television, when she was a girl she premiered the children’s program “Sheriff Marco’s Show”. She then was part of the cast of the program “La casa de Pequita”, with Horacio Lamadrid and Anita Ontivero. She was also the host of “El Calientísimo del 9”; she produced alongside Carlos Bash del Gordo de la Semana and she worked as an investigative journalist on “Otra vez con Yaqui”.

Since she was a child, Nuria’s work was part of her family’s sustenance, so when she left the Hottest of 9 she forced her to assume her own television space.

There were many visits to Adriano Rodríguez, who had most of the spaces leased in Color Vision. After a long wait, she was received and got a time slot from 6:00 to 7:00 at night, on Saturdays, by Color Vision.

On January 17, 1987, the first investigative program “Nuria en el 9” aired, which, thanks to its acceptance, went on to occupy prime time on Saturdays, 9:00 at night. The persistent journalist never thought that the program would reach 35 years. In fact, some predicted three months, since at the time of her departure it was not usual on Dominican television.

His space marked a milestone in bringing deep investigations of corruption, violence, embezzlement, rape, abuse of power and other evils to television.

His work crossed borders when he exposed the famous communicator Cristina Saralegui, who used actors on her program “El Show de Cristina” (Univisión) to recreate false stories.

It is also remembered how he dismantled the “telephone free zone” that the astrologer Walter Mercado had in the country with the business of predicting the future and reading horoscopes.

Over the years it has been difficult to wear Nuria Piera’s shoes. Very few have embarked on this type of journalism, paradoxically, in the country, women have the baton in their hands in these spaces.

“It is the most difficult job in journalism, the fact that it is the most difficult to get staff is demonstrated, the vast majority of communication students are not interested in street journalism, that is why the universities have led the race for the television, cinema or other areas”.

He recalled that to practice this type of journalism, dedication, courage, courage, talent, and a sharpened sense of smell are needed. “You have to be patient, be a little obsessive, search all the time, not settle for a single answer, move forward, it’s just not staying with the how, when and where.”

Looking back over 35 years of television research, Nuria reflects: “One of the things that makes the road easier is not thinking about what you want to achieve, because if you set a goal, they can limit you and make the road more difficult. I think that the important thing is to focus on the work, honest and without poses, and always keep working, that has been my secret of success”.
