Nuno Tavares had plenty to say after Portugal’s victory over Armenia. He spoke with reporters in the mixed zone, having come on for the second half of the game. He sounded confident about the national team’s win.
“Did Portugal take it easy?” a reporter asked. Tavares quickly denied it. He explained how the team stuck to their plan from the start. “In the first half, we did what we needed to do,” he said. “We built a comfortable lead.” But the team didn’t stop there. They kept pushing for more goals, ultimately securing the win. “We wanted to win from the very first minute,” Tavares stressed. He pointed out the locker room was focused and united. Everyone knew their job. They made things simple in those opening forty-five minutes.
Then came a question about a special moment during the game. Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 21st minute. This is the same number Diogo Jota wears on his jersey. “What was the feeling about Ronaldo scoring in the 21st minute, Diogo Jota’s shirt number?” a journalist inquired. Tavares said everyone on the team was genuinely happy. It showed Jota’s spirit was with them, even if he wasn’t on the field. “It made this moment happen,” Tavares shared, adding, “He will always be among us.” It was a touching nod to a teammate.
Looking ahead, the next challenge is Hungary. “Will the game against Hungary be tougher?” another reporter wondered. Tavares believes it will be a good game against a strong opponent. But he promised Portugal would be ready. “We’ll be prepared, just like for any other team,” he stated. The focus remains on doing their job well. When asked if he expected to start, Tavares was humble but clear. “Starting doesn’t depend on me,” he admitted. However, his desire to contribute is strong. “I am here and prepared like the others to give my best and play for the National Team.” He emphasized his personal ambition. “As a player, I always want to be among the best.” Tavares concluded with a simple, powerful message. “It’s always a pleasure to represent the National Team. I am just one more player ready to help the team.”
