Nuno Borges outlasted Casper Ruud in a thrilling match at Roland Garros. Borges, ranked 41st in the world, took down the 8th-ranked Ruud in four sets: 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, and 6-0.
A Turning Point
Borges sensed Ruud was slowing down in the third set. “I kept trying and noticed he was getting a bit slower,” Borges said. “Obviously, he wasn’t 100%. I’m not sure if the result would have been the same.” Ruud’s physical limitations were apparent, and he received medical attention for his left knee.
Borges’ win marked a milestone: he’s the first Portuguese male tennis player to reach the third round at Roland Garros. He also became the first Portuguese player to beat a top-10 opponent in a Grand Slam tournament.
What’s Next
Borges will face Alexei Popyrin, ranked 25th in the world, in the next round. Popyrin defeated Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets: 7-5, 6-3, and 6-4.
