Nuno Borges saw his Wimbledon run come to an end this weekend. The 28-year-old, ranked 37th in the world, finished his fourth appearance at the storied tournament.
It was a tough stretch for Borges. On Friday, he battled for nearly four hours in his singles match. He eventually fell short there. Then came Saturday, with another challenge in the men’s doubles.
Borges teamed up with American Marcos Giron. They faced a strong pair in Yuki Bhambri from India and Robert Galloway from the United States. This duo entered the tournament as the 16th seeds.
The match lasted just ninety minutes. Bhambri and Galloway took the win in two straight sets. The scores were 6-3, 7-6. The second set, though, was a real nail-biter.
Borges and Giron found themselves ahead 5-2 in that second set. Victory felt within their grasp. But their opponents mounted a surprising comeback. They broke serve, making it 5-4. Then, they pushed the set to a tie-break and won it 8-6. This sudden turn meant no third set, and the match was over.
Despite the disappointment of falling short, Borges and Giron don’t leave empty-handed. They earned 26,000 euros in prize money for their efforts. It’s a good sum, even if the Wimbledon dream has to wait another year.
