Notary Condemned to Over 4 Years for $2 Million Scam in Maldonado

A court in Maldonado handed down a prison sentence of over four years to a notary public for fraud, document forgery, and embezzlement.

The case started with a tip to the police in September 2024. Someone reported a scam in the capital city. The victim lived abroad and had hired a local notary to handle a real estate purchase. The notary asked the victim to sign a reservation agreement and make a $100,000 bank transfer.

Months later, in January 2025, the victim got a call from the notary’s lawyer. The lawyer said the notary was too sick and had legal issues, so she couldn’t finish the paperwork. The victim never got their money back.

Investigation Uncovers More Crimes

The investigation found the notary was involved in more scams, embezzlement, and forgery. The total value was around $2 million.

Vulnerable Victims

One victim’s lawyer, Sebastián Serrón Bon, said the notary preyed on people in tough spots. He mentioned a woman with a sick child who was promised a better deal on her money. The notary’s story was a scam.

The notary’s crimes have left a trail of victims. The case is a reminder to be cautious when dealing with strangers, especially when it comes to large sums of money and important documents.
