Sporting CP surprisingly took second place in group C of the Champions League, the group of Ajax. The Portuguese were 3-1 too strong for Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening and can therefore no longer be traced by the Germans based on mutual results.
Dortmund started the match stronger, but it was Sporting that opened the score after half an hour of play. Pedro Goncalves made it 1-0. Ten minutes later, the Portuguese attacker was again accurate, with a nice bang of about eighteen meters (2-0).
Five minutes before half time, Donyell Malen had the chance to score 2-1 on behalf of Borussia Dortmund. The Orange international passed goalkeeper Antonio Adán, but his shot was taken off the line by Gonçalo Inácio.
After the break Dortmund fought for his last chance. Figuratively, but also literally twenty minutes before the final whistle. Emre Can got into a fight with Pedro Porro, lost control and was able to push in with a red card.
With ten men, the visitors chased for the connecting goal that would keep the hopes of wintering alive, if Dortmund had lost by one goal, the mutual result would have been in favor of the Germans, but without success.
Ten minutes before the end, Pedro Porro even made it 3-0 by heading in from the rebound after Goncalves blew his hat-trick by missing from the penalty spot.
Because of that third Portuguese goal, Malen’s goal in injury time (3-1), his second of this Champions League season, was only one for the statistics. He and Dortmund will have to console themselves with Europa League football in 2022.
