North Korea: the firing of an intercontinental missile condemned by the UN, whose Security Council will meet on Friday

North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into Japan’s exclusive economic maritime zone on March 24. South Korean President Moon Jae-in confirmed this launch in stride. By carrying out this launch, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un broke a moratorium he had observed on this type of missile launch since November 2017.

The North Korean armed forces had tested a new type of ICBM, the Hwasong-15, capable of carrying “an extra-large heavy warhead” capable of striking the entire continental United States. the UN Security Council condemned “with force” this shot that “runs the risk of an escalation of significant tensions in the region”according to the spokesman for the Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The UN Secretary General “reaffirms its commitment to work with all parties to seek a peaceful and diplomatic solution towards the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula”, added his spokesperson. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, Albania, Ireland and Norway have requested a meeting of the Security Council, which will be held on Friday from 7 p.m. GMT (8 p.m. in Paris).
