North Korea confirms missile launch on submarine

North Korea confirmed on Wednesday the test of a newly developed missile that is designed to be launched from a submarine, in what is the first test of such a weapon in two years and that it says will strengthen the submarine operational capability of your army.

South Korea reported Tuesday that it detected the missile launch and said the weapon landed in the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan. The South Korean armed forces described the missile as a submarine-launched short-range ballistic missile and said it was launched from waters near the eastern port of Sinpo, where North Korea has a major shipyard dedicated to building submarines.

The news agency said Tuesday’s launch was carried out from the same “8.24 Yongung” submarine that North Korea said it used for its first test of a submarine-launched strategic ballistic missile in 2016.

Tuesday’s launch is North Korea’s most notorious weapons test since US President Joe Biden took office in January. Washington has repeatedly said that it is willing to resume diplomatic discussions with North Korea “anywhere, anytime” without preconditions. So far, North Korea has rejected those proposals, noting that hostile practices by the United States continue.
