North Korea has officially enshrined its military involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, breaking ground on a memorial to honor its fallen soldiers and cementing a deepening strategic alliance with Moscow.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the “Museum of Combat Heroism” was held last Thursday in Pyongyang. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian Ambassador Alexander Matsegora both attended the event.
The memorial aims to be a sacred place for patriots. It will display sculptures, photographs, and art celebrating North Korean soldiers who participated in the Ukraine conflict.
Kim Jong Un stated during the ceremony that North Korean soldiers fought decisively for a Russian victory. He said, “Our heroes bravely destroyed the neo-Nazi aggressors with a spirit that does not allow any aggression.”
He further emphasized that relations between North Korea and Russia have reached their highest historical level. The memorial is intended to symbolize the strong friendship between the two nations.
Pyongyang officially acknowledged sending troops to Ukraine in April. It also confirmed that some soldiers have died in action.
South Korean reports indicate that at least 600 North Korean soldiers have died. Thousands more have been injured fighting in Ukraine.
North Korea has provided substantial personnel and equipment to support Russia. This assistance began in 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Last year, North Korea and Russia signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement. This pact mandates mutual military and other forms of aid if either party faces an attack.
The United States has presented evidence suggesting Russia has supplied North Korea with advanced technology. This includes space and satellite capabilities. This aid is reportedly in exchange for military support in the Ukraine war.
In Moscow, an art exhibition recently celebrated the two countries’ relationship. It depicted North Korean and Russian soldiers jointly fighting hostile Western nations.
