Noronha Lopes Targets Benfica Opponents, Proposes Train Return & Decentralization

João Noronha Lopes, a hopeful for Benfica’s top job, recently laid out his vision. He aims to unseat both Rui Costa and Luís Filipe Vieira, current powerful figures at the club. The big election is set for October 25, and Lopes isn’t holding back. Speaking on the ‘Benfica Independente’ podcast, the executive took a look back at the club’s journey. He also sketched out some bold moves he plans to make if he wins. “Our real rivals?” he asked, “They are the candidates who stand for Benfica’s old ways.”

Lopes wasn’t alone in sharing these ideas. He brought Nuno Gomes, a football legend slated to be his vice-president for the sport. Ricardo Araújo Pereira, a well-known supporter, also joined them. Together, they unveiled a nostalgic plan: bringing a special fan train back to Benfica. This isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s a dream many fans have held onto for ages. Lopes described it as a fresh way to connect the club with its members all across the country.

This special train would carry fans directly to the Estádio da Luz for home games. It would also follow the team when they play away from home. Lopes promised this isn’t just talk. He confirmed they have already found partners for the project. He believes it simply comes down to having the will to make it happen, and his team’s commitment is absolute.

Beyond the train, Lopes also wants to spread the club’s reach. He plans to move some matches for other club sports out of Lisbon. This move aims to bring those games closer to members who live further afield. It’s all part of making the club feel more accessible to its entire fan base.
