No word from the Warriors

As if the carnivorous instinct had disappeared, as if they were there without being at allthese Warriors with air to The Last Dancethe dynasty that is fading before our eyes, returned to repeat mistakes and be condemned in those types of matches that in other times never lost. We do not know if the champion has another one inside career in the playoffs, a mutation that crushes the competition in, furthermore, a very open West, without too clear hierarchies and in which, by pure design, no one really knows anything. What we do know is that we are already in February, with the market close and All Star Weekend on top. That is to say, with the final stretch of the regular season one step away. And the 2022-23 Warriors are still an irregular team, unbalancedwith a fatigue that seems to be in the legs but also, or perhaps especially, in the spirit.

The Warriors lost in Minneapolis (119-114) one of those games, I insist, that they never lost. They managed a +14 with 11 minutes remaining (82-96) despite the fact that their third quarter had been weak, a missed opportunity to dismantle a rival, the Timberwolves, who didn’t seem to believe it until he had it in the pantry. “We have given them victory in wrapping paper”, said Steve Kerr later, who left another much more significant message: “We are not good enough to win without executing our game plan. Before we were, but now…”.

The mass of losses, errors in free throws and shots missed by the Wolves had left the victory on a platter. But the Warriors didn’t know how to finish off, nobody scored in the last minute and a half and it went to overtime where those from Bahía took the lead (110-112) but only scored two more points in four minutes and a bit. A disaster. They remain at 26-25, without moving away from what is not or play in (the eleventh is a game from them) and tonight he plays in Denverin back to back and on the most difficult court in the West, that of the Conference leader. Kerr has dished out massive layoffs on nights like this, we’ll see what he does this time after an overtime in which his team lost again: 1-3 this season and 2-15 in their last 17 overtime games. Curious.

Curry had 21 points and a 5/6 triple at halftime (62-71). But he finished with 29 and a 5/12 (8/21 in total shots). missed winners to amend his bad end of the game. Also Klay Thompson, who had 11 points at halftime and finished with 14 and 3/13 shooting. The Warriors completely lost control at the beginning of the fourth quarter, they did not have any hierarchy and they did not even take advantage of the extra lives that they were given, at the end, some missed shots perfectly open of the Wolves. In extra time, they kept rolling downhill with that image so inappropriate of them but to which we are already getting used to in this season in which the switch is not finished being pressed. And the weeks go by. The risk, the biggest of all, is that the switch this time is just props.

For the Wolves, it was a great victory. First, because they felt it very far away for a good part of the night. Because of the score, but above all because of the sensations. Also because they move (28-26 now) through the same area with strong waves from the West, a neighborhood that is as easy to come fifth as twelfth for simply a handful of coins that fall heads or tails. With 13/24 in free throws and 28% in triples, the champion is not usually beaten. But this champion has little of a champion… for now. Without Karl-Anthony Towns and without Rudy Gobert, without those Twin Towers that we still don’t know if they will fit or not, the Wolves seem to work more comfortably, with Kyle Anderson as point forward in it four and Naz Reid as center/hammer (24 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists). Reid missed open triples to kill before but sealed the victory with a dunk that set the pavilion on fire after an attack rebound. The Warriors, who would have had a ball to try to tie it, looked on in amazement.

Anthony Edwards, who at times seemed not to be 100%, appeared in overtime after not scoring in the fourth quarter and finished at 27+6+5. He former warrior De’Angelo Russell, out at the start of extra time, lit up the comeback with 14 of his 29 points in the first half of the fourth quarter, when the Warriors lost the thread in a calamitous way and let him pick up rhythm and temperature. Austin Rivers chased Curry all over the track and helped, biting. In a strange season, with more bad than good, the Wolves continue there. And they’ll see what they do with Towns and Gobert, that wasn’t tonight’s story. In front, the Warriors deny themselves every option they find to release bubbles of optimism. It is the way they have left, this season. It looks bad… but it’s the Warriors.
